Activity in Dominica
The Seismic Research Center (UWI) is monitoring a volcanic earthquake sequence in northern Dominica which started on June 26th. This activity remains moderate and could be linked to the Morne au Diable volcano (Source: SRC)
 
Strange underwater detonations
In the northwest of Martinique, for several months, the fishermen and scuba divers on the have reported the regular occurrence of underwater detonations. Those vary in intensity. Scientists from the Mt Pelee Volcano Observatory have launched some research in order to determine the origin of these events. An hydrophone was installed to record the sounds. Eruption in Montserrat
Montserrat Volcano Observatory (British West-Indies) reports that Activity was high on Friday October 16 with several large pyroclastic flows reaching the sea down the White River to the south. IA number of moderate sized pyroclastic flows to the north east were also observed. Extensive ash clouds formed and rose to a maximum of 20,000 ft they resulted in only minimal ash fall in inhabited areas. (Source: MVO)

A moderate jolt was felt in Martinique in the early morning of October 16 at 03:53.  Epicenter: 15.357°N, 60.188°W i.e. 125 km (80 miles) NE de FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique Depth: -34 km Magnitude: 4.6 (Sources: DOMACTU / USGS)

Mount Pelee towers above the island of Martinique, in the West Indies. Since 1902, it is one of the most famous volcanoes on Earth ; its eruption led to the destruction of the entire city of Saint-Pierre, with its 28,000 inhabitants.

Mount Pelee volcano erupting in 1902The study of the causes of the disaster marks the begining of modern volcanology with the definition and the analysis of the deadliest volcanic hazard : the pyroclastic flows and surges, also called nuees ardentes (French term meaning glowing avalanches). A specific eruption style has also been defined: The Pelean eruption style.
