Montserrat activity
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory reports that the Soufriere Hills activity remains at a low level. There was no significant changes in the lava dome. Spots of incandescance could still be observed on clear nights.Sporadic pyroclastic flows may continue to occur without any warning. The Hazard Level is 3 (out of 5). (Source: MVO, September 2011)
 
Activity in Dominica
The Seismic Research Center (UWI) is monitoring a volcanic earthquake sequence in northern Dominica which started on June 26th. This activity remains moderate and could be linked to the Morne au Diable volcano (Source: SRC)

Mount Pelee towers above the island of Martinique, in the West Indies. Since 1902, it is one of the most famous volcanoes on Earth ; its eruption led to the destruction of the entire city of Saint-Pierre, with its 28,000 inhabitants.

Mount Pelee volcano erupting in 1902The study of the causes of the disaster marks the begining of modern volcanology with the definition and the analysis of the deadliest volcanic hazard : the pyroclastic flows and surges, also called nuees ardentes (French term meaning glowing avalanches). A specific eruption style has also been defined: The Pelean eruption style.
