Geologist and explorer, professor of invertebrate paleontology at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, first president of the Geographical Society of Philadelphia. Angelo Heilprin was part of the US scientific mission sent to Martinique after May 8th to examine the erupting mount Pelee.

A. Heilprin wrote several books and articles used as references in the english litterature, especially his book published in 1903: Mount Pelée and the tragedy of Martinique : a study of the great catastrophe of 1902 with observations and experiences in the field . - Philadelphia : J.B. Lippincott Company. 335p.

His field work in Martinique was quite remarkable, his pictures of the volcanic phenomena and their consequences are still famous and widely used. He is one of the first scientist to climb the erupting volcano, along with G. Kennan.

Angelo Heilprin is co-founder of the American Alpine Club.
