Since the occupation of the island of Martinique by European settlers, in 1635, there are 4 records of eruptions from Mt. Pelee volcano. 2 phreatic eruptions in 1792 and 1851, then 2 magmatic eruptions in 1902 and 1929.
However, thanks to the analysis of deposits, volcanologists have identified more than 30 major eruptions from the volcano in the past 5,000 years.

The 1792 events are known today mostly as a result of the work of Professor Alfred Lacroix carried out after the eruption of 1902. There was absolutely no recollection of that minor eruption among the population of Martinique. |
